The Pilates Chair

The Wunda Chair, as Joseph Pilates originally called it, is a compact but highly effective piece of Pilates equipment. It offers a challenging and rewarding way to build strength, control, balance, and confidence in movement.

Key Benefits

  • Builds upper- and lower-body strength
  • Improves core stability, balance, and coordination
  • Develops shoulder-girdle stability, mobility, and strength
  • Supports functional movements such as standing, climbing, pushing, and lifting

Exercise Variety and Progression

With more than 25 exercise categories, the Wunda Chair offers a varied and engaging way to progress your Pilates practice. Many exercises build on familiar matwork movements, adding challenge, precision, and enjoyment as your strength and confidence develop.

Who It Can Support

The Wunda Chair can be particularly beneficial if you enjoy sports such as skiing, running, tennis, golf, rugby, or football, as it supports strength, stability, and control for everyday and athletic movement. It can also be adapted for clients who find lying on their back uncomfortable, offering an effective way to continue Pilates and footwork in a more supportive, rehabilitation-focused setting.

Part of the Pilates System

The Wunda Chair forms part of the wider Pilates system, working alongside equipment such as the Reformer, Trapeze Table, and Barrel. Together, these pieces of equipment support and enhance matwork, which remains at the heart of the Pilates method.

My Teaching Background

I have been teaching Pilates for 12 years, offering matwork classes and one-to-one sessions from my home studio using Reformers and my new Wunda Chair. My training has been completed through Balanced Body Education, and I enjoy helping clients build strength, confidence, and ease of movement through thoughtful, supportive teaching.
